Aristea capitata
I couldn’t resist a second staff pick that is quite different from the showy cultivated dahlias. We’ve been trying for years to propagate the rare Aristea capitata from our South African Cape collection, and we finally have a limited supply to offer. This evergreen rhizomatous species forms a clump of stiff leaves that grow up to 3 ft high and then puts on a striking floral display of tall dense spikes containing many 1 inch gentian blue flowers, starting in late spring and lasting for months. This plant likes sun and requires little water—ideal for the Bay Area garden. Paul Licht Thursday Propagation Area Sales
