Garden Garments

Learn to dye with creative alternative sources of natural plant dyes from your very own garden, or even urban sidewalk, with Sasha Duerr, textile designer and founder of Permacouture Institute. Create a surprising array of colors for a garden dyers sample book and artistically dye a plant colored and patterned textile to take home with you!
$40 non-members, $35 members, price includes all materials.
Naturally Dyed Easter Eggs, a Children's Workshop
Saturday March 22, 2008, 2pm - 3pm

This hands-on workshop will introduce children to the joy of natural dyes while they create their own way of dyeing brilliant plant-based colors for their Easter Eggs. Along, with Sasha Duerr, founder of the Living and Dyeing Project, which teaches natural dyeing in school garden programs, children enjoy the connection of surprising organic sources for their eggs, naturally! Includes a tour of the Fiber and Dye Exhibit.
$20, $15 members. Price includes one adult and one child, $10 each additional child or adult per family
Fiber & Dye Exhibit
Saturday March 14- Monday March 31, 2008, 9am – 5pm

Discover the rich history of using plants for fibers and dyes. Walk through the Garden’s colorful exhibit of various plants used for fibers and dyes. Do hands on dye-ing activities and see products made from plant fibers and plant dyes by students of California College of the Arts That inspire textiles dyes that color, Permacouture Institute.

The biodiversity of plant-based fibers and dyes is vast. The University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley invites you to learn more about the world of natural fibers and dyes. From traditional uses to inspired future innovation in eco-fashion and textiles, a walk through our exhibit illuminates the connection of culture with nature. Collaborators:
Cotton, linen, and other natural fibers such as bamboo, hemp, soya, abaca and pina (pineapple) provide a multitude of material options for textiles. From basket weaving, to denim jeans, plants have allowed for both utility and beauty in our everyday lives.
Plant dyeing can be an incredibly rewarding and awe- inspiringmethod of creating color. Natural color can be created from everything from daffodils to eucalyptus. The craft of natural dyeing has existed for thousands of years. Natural dyes for clothing and textiles were most likely discovered through the process of cooking and creating medicine from plant sources. Natural dyeing is a craft that holds insight into the science of color and nature, as well as a window into the long history of inspired human creativity and design.
