The Garden is the perfect place for your wedding, corporate event or family celebration. With beautiful landscapes, a majestic Redwood Grove, and proximity to Berkeley, Oakland, Walnut Creek and San Francisco, the Garden is a favorite location for all types of events. Stephen J. Mather Redwood Grove and Amphitheatre

Beloved by brides, the Garden's Stephen T. Mather Redwood Grove provides an enchanting setting for weddings. Coast redwoods, (Sequoia sempervirens), planted in the 1930's, tower above a lush forest floor of companion native California plantings.

The centerpiece of the grove is the intimate Townsend Amphitheatre, the setting for forest fantasy weddings. The bridal party glides under the towering redwood canopy to meet the gathered guests at the amphitheatre and solemnize their union in this magnificent cathedral of redwoods.

Mirov Room/Ornduff Room/Terrace

Conference Center

Inside the Conference Center are two adjoining rooms, the Mirov and the smaller Ornduff. Each has greenhouse windows that let the sunshine in, as well as showcase the surrounding greenery. You might host your banquet in the Mirov, then do the cake cutting in the Ornduff and dance on the Terrace. Or during the cooler months, begin in the Ornduff for cocktails, then move into Mirov for your reception. The secluded site (with no neighbors to disturb) is perfect for dancing late into the night.

Rose Garden The Garden of Old Roses

Garden of Old Roses

Situated high on the east slope of the Garden with dramatic views of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge, the Garden of Old Roses is a storybook wedding or venue. Glorious rose cultivars from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and modern roses, are under-planted with many complementary flowering annuals and perennials. Arrive at the site under a canopy of seasonal roses cascading over the beams of a quaint wooden pergola. Rough-hewn steps climb up a terraced knoll, resplendent with a mix of lavender, dahlias and antique roses. The steps arrive at a terrace where family and friends gather for intimate wedding nuptials in an unforgettable rose bower.

Catering

We are pleased to offer an approved caterer list from which to choose. There is a $500 buy-out fee to use a caterer not on the list. The Garden requires advance approval of caterers before authorizing the $500 buy-out fee. Self-catering is not permitted. Renters may bring in and pour their own alcohol.

  • $750 rental deposit; refundable upon successful rental; non-refundable if renter cancels
  • Event liability Insurance (the Rental Coordinator will guide you through this process)
  • UC reserved parking (the Rental Coordinator will submit your reserved parking request, payable in advance)

Additional rental details:

  • Balance due one month after the contract is signed
  • If available, the Garden will hold a date for 48 hours with no deposit
  • Deposit for hourly rental is 50% of the final agreed upon price
  • Amplified music is allowed after 5pm; a sound system is not provided

  • Projection screen at the reception venue (projector provided by renter)
  • Podium and microphone at the reception venue (amplified music system not available)
  • Wi-Fi and high speed internet at the reception venue (secured in advance)

Parking

The University of California, Berkeley owns and operates the parking lot adjacent to the Garden and sets all fees.

  • Between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm parking for up to 50 cars maximum must be paid in advance. Groups larger than 100 guests must arrange off-site parking and shuttle to the UCBG.
  • Events beginning at 5 and later: the entire parking lot (71 spaces) may be reserved at prevailing UC rates.
  • An additional fee for UC parking attendants may be required in some cases.
  • The Rental Coordinator will reserve your on-site parking, payable in advance at UC rates.

How to Book

We encourage you to visit the Garden and meet with Rental Coordinator Margie Richardson. The Garden is open daily, including weekends from 9 am until 5 pm. Ms. Richardson is onsite Monday – Friday, 9am until 5 pm and the second Sunday of every month. Schedule an appointment or drop-in and ask for a rental package at the Entrance Kiosk.

Frequently Asked Questions

When may I book? The Rental Coordinator will check date availability for you.

Will you hold dates? We can hold a date for 48 hours without a deposit. Thereafter a deposit and a signed contract are needed. We may have two or more rentals a one day, but only one in the Conference Center. The Garden maintains a hour down-time between rentals.

How many tables and chairs do you have? We have nine round tables (5' diameter) and ten rectangular tables (6' x2.5') plus 113 chairs.

What is the minimum rental period? Two hours.

What does a rental monitor do? A rental monitor makes sure your rental goes smoothly. They check in with your caterer every half hour, post event signs, unlock the changing room, help to direct guests to your event and to the restrooms, direct deliveries in and out of the Garden, etc.

May we have amplified music? You may have low level, background music in the Conference Center & Terrace during open hours. Amplified, DJ or live music is permitted indoors & outdoors after 5 pm. The Mather Grove has electricity and music is permitted.

May we use candles and heaters? Candles and chafing dishes are permitted indoors only. Candles or fire of any sort are not permitted outdoors in the Garden of Mather Redwood Grove. Terrace heaters are allowed by special arrangement with the Rental Coordinator.

When must our event end? All events must end at 11 pm with clean-up being completed by 12 am.

May I use my own caterer? You must choose from our list of approved caterers or pay a $500 buy-out fee for choosing another licensed & insured caterer. Your caterer must produce proof of insurance. Self-catering is not allowed.

What kinds of decorations are not permitted? The only kinds of decorations which are not permitted are: Hanging materials on light cables, walls, ceilings, fences, outdoor candles, balloons, carpets or runners on paths, posting of sings, pets and animals, the release of birds or butterflies, rice confetti. Flower petals must be removed immediately following the ceremony. Grove must be left as you found it. Please contact the Rental Coordinator for more info.

May my guests walk through the Garden during our event? Only during regular open hours, otherwise rentals guests must stay within the vicinity of the rented area at all times. Children must be supervised at all times. Pets are not allowed in the Garden or Mather Grove at any time.

What kind of parking arrangements do you offer? Advanced parking arrangements are necessary to assure sufficient spaces for your guests. We are happy to place your reserved parking order with the UC Special Event Parking Office. They will generate an invoice of event parking fees for you, payable in advance. Please ask the Rental Coordinator for current UC event parking fees.

May we or our vendors drop off, decorate, etc. early or pick up items later than our contracted rental period? Unfortunately, our full calendar of rentals and other Garden events make it impossible for the Garden to accommodate these special requests.
