"NEWTS FLASH"

The newt breeding season is in full swing with better viewing than ever.

Adults of two species, Taricha torosa and Taricha granulosa, breed annually in the pool and will likely be relatively abundant through March.

Newts being collected to allow cleaning of the Japanese Pool. The New Year's Eve torrential rains caused mudslides, filling much of the Pool with soil and silt.

The small aquatic larvae from last year are also easily seen in the shallows along the pool's edge.
The cleaning of the Japanese pool has made it possible to readily view the many dozens of adult newts courting and breeding, with many hundreds of egg masses strewn across the bottom and attached to vegetation.
