Collection Update COVID March 25, 2020 The procession of geophytes and annuals begins on the hillside in Southern Africa. Storm clouds provide dramatic contrast to new foliage and flowers on the road between Asia and Australasia. A bank of Ceanothus ‘Ray Hartman’ competes with a patch of blue sky for intensity of color. The fuzzy new growth on Saurauia madrensis is as delightful as the flowers that will soon unfurl. The mossy Obata Gate glows after a light rain. A garden pathway surrounded by flowering trees and shrubs. In the Mediterranean section, geophytes like Narcissus hedraeanthus are speckling the understory. One of the magnificent Rhododendron coming into flower in the Garden (Rhododendron ‘Loderi King George’) Scarlet balls of Bomarea sp. flowers light up a bed in the South America section. New foliage of Matudaea trinervia is nearly florescent when backlit. Giant blooms on a tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) in the Asia section.
