Pressed Plants: Art and Science

August 3, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

$25 – $35
A selection from the Greenberg herbarium of a pressed flowering manzanita.

Discover both the scientific purpose of herbarium plant pressing from Andrew Doran, UCBG Director of Collections, and the creative use of pressed plants for artistic compositions from Katherine Greenberg, UCBG Board Member. Andrew, who worked for many years at the UC Berkeley Herbaria, will begin the workshop with a brief overview of the significance of pressed plant collections. Then, utilizing California native plants from her esteemed home garden, Katherine will demonstrate techniques for creating pressed specimens, including using a plant press, and mounting the finished pressings.

Katherine Greenberg is a garden designer and co‐author of Growing California Native Plants. Her plant pressings have been displayed as art in a number of settings, and is currently part of an exhibit entitled Out of the Wild and Into the Garden: Documenting Native Plants in Contemporary and Historical Gardens on view at the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design from May 1 to September 1, 2025. You can read more about the show here.

This presentation will include a handout with resources and guidelines for creating your own herbarium or pressed plant art. Registration includes same day admission to the Botanical Garden.
