Zoom Botany Talk: Botanical Explorations in Namaqualand

March 11, 2026 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

Take a virtual plant expedition to South Africa! Join Horticulturist Ethan Fenner and Director of Collections Andrew Doran as they share photos from their recent 10-day expedition into Namaqualand, the arid region of South Africa’s North West coast. This area is known among botanists for its immense plant diversity, including otherworldly forms of succulents, intricate and ephemeral bulbs, and dazzling displays of annual flowers. Many of the species they highlight are exceedingly rare, highly endangered, and at risk of being poached out of their native habitat. Learn more about these plants, and the Garden’s role in conservation, as the “superbloom” begins on the Garden’s Southern Africa hillside.

Program is free, donations welcome, registration required for Zoom link.

NOTE: All participants are required to have and sign into their own personal Zoom account prior to joining meetings hosted by UC Berkeley.
