Lewis Feldman, Garden Director

The UC Botanical Garden has recently been notified that one of our main Garden buildings, Julia Morgan Hall, is among the 2020 WoodWorks’ U.S. Wood Design Award winners, presented by the Wood Product Council. The WoodWorks award program “celebrates excellence in wood building design…the winning projects are a kind of bellwether for market trends—such as greater focus on sustainability, carbon footprint, and resilience.” Nominations from across the country were evaluated by an independent jury who recognized Julia Morgan Hall with the 2020 award for the Best Adaptable and Durable Wood Structure.

Julia Morgan Hall was designed in 1911 by Julia Morgan as the Senior Women’s Hall at Berkeley. In the award write-up, the building is described as an “elegant redwood bungalow with exposed wall and roof framing and a natural-finish interior”. The building was moved to the UC Botanical Garden in 2014 and overlooks the California area of the Botanical Garden.
